IT Engineering Services Manager

Redback Networks designs and markets networking solutions that enable telecommunications carriers to deploy next generation broadband services such as VoIP, IPTV, On-Demand Video, and on-line gaming. Redback was founded in 1996 and was acquired by Ericsson in January 2007 for $2.1 Billion in cash. We remain a wholly owned subsidiary and are based in San Jose, CA. We are experiencing rapid growth and are looking for new talent to join the IT team.

We are seeking a hands-on IT Engineering Services Manager to support and grow Redback’s core global IT infrastructure. In this role you will play a critical role in enhancing strong relationships between the IT dept and the R&D management and leaders in the company, ensuring that support services stay ahead of business needs. You will also lead a small team of Linux and storage systems administrators tasked with designing, deploying, and operating the company’s worldwide R&D infrastructure, including several hundred Linux servers and over 75TB of storage in our San Jose and Vancouver data centers. Specific responsibilities include:

• Oversee and manage day-to-day operation of our engineering services in San Jose and Vancouver, including management and capacity planning of Unix servers and NAS storage systems, backup systems, Clearcase and CVS systems, build servers, and over 1,000 netbooted engineer workstations
• Implement next generation tiered storage and backup systems, evaluate best ways to increase flexibility through virtualization, and manage a migration from Gentoo Linux to Red Hat
• Design and deploy best practices regarding system monitoring, change control, service level agreements, root cause analysis, and assist in the creation of engineering support policies and standards
• Provide guidance and recommendations on architectural changes and enhancements to the R&D infrastructure to improve reliably and performance, reduce cost, and anticipate company growth
• Create, document, manage operational processes to ensure consistency
• Provide senior level leadership to the Information Technology team, assist with mentoring and providing technical guidance to more junior staff members

Job Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years Unix experience plus at least 4 years personnel management experience
• Experience managing software or hardware R&D environments is strongly desired
• Demonstrated experience must include senior level Linux systems administration work (Gentoo and/or Red Hat preferred)
• Extensive hands-on experience with NetApp NAS (or equivalent) high availability environments, including OnTap7, snapmirror, flexvol, and snapvault software
• Experience deploying and supporting enterprise netboot enviroments
• Experience with the following UNIX software and tools: Apache, BIND, RSYNC, Sendmail, Postfix, Amavis, Nagios, gmake, gcc, PAM, proc filesystem, sysctl
• Strong knowledge of the following programming and scripting languages: Perl, Python, shell, Expect, C
• In-depth understanding of common network protocols and their associated servers such as NFS, SSH, FTP, RSYNC, DNS, DHCP, NIS, TCP/IP, SAMBA, iSCSI, POP, IMAP
• Senior level understanding the architecture of TCP/IP LANs and WANs
• Basic Microsoft Windows and Office skills are required
• Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple problems and issues with minimal supervision, excellent organizational skills, a teamwork approach to work but also act independently to solve problems when necessary
• Knowledge of ITIL standards particularly as related to incident, problem, and change management
• Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills, resiliency in the face of continual change, and ability to handle high demands
• Good oral and written English communication skills, strong interpersonal skills
• Availability to occasionally travel to national and international locations
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime and after hours work

Education

• College degree (BA or BS) in a computer science or engineering field, or equivalent experience
